Retratos de Quinceañeras

Amanda Quince

There’s something a little bit magical about a quinceañera celebration.  Maybe it the dozens of teenagers all dressed up in fancy dresses and tuxedos.  It could also be the 8 to 20 girls and guys in choreographed dance moves working together to create something beautiful.  When Dad kneels at his daughter’s feet and changes her shoes to the fancy high heeled women’s shoe and the look on his face when he looks up and sees his daughter and realizes that she is no longer his little girl.  It makes me cry every time.  Then the young teenage boy comes and takes her away and they start the dance.  I think of my own daughters and sometimes I want to just say no, you put those old shoes on and stay and little girl just a few more years.  Do it for your Mom.  They never do though, they just keep growing and before you know it they are calling me to take engagement and wedding photos.  Amanda, you are so beautiful and you look so grown up in these photos.  If I could say anything to you here it is to keep the magic going.  You have 5 more years to be a teenager and finish high school and start college.  Enjoy those years and remember this day and the love your parents have for you.  Okay friends and family, let’s hear it for Amanda.  Leave your comments here.

Amanda Rico Quince Session

I just love photographing these beautiful girls.  Each one is beautiful in their own way and Amanda was gorgeous in her dress.  We did the session in my garden studio and I had a lot of fun playing with different areas of the yard.  Amanda was great to work with and we got tons of great images.  Stay tuned for the party photos to be posted here soon.

Saida Vera Quince Session

Another session in my garden.  Saida is visiting from Texas for her cousins quinceañera and her mom called to see if they could get some photos taken while they were here.  It was a beautiful session and she is a gorgeous girl as you can see in the photos.  I really had a lot of fun taking these and I think she did too.

Georgina Quince Party

As promised here are the photos from Georgina’s party.  For those unfamiliar with a Quince party I will explain a little bit.  In most hispanic countries there is a tradition of having a big party at a girl’s 15th birthday.  Very much like the old European custom of inviting friends and family to a ball when a girl turned 16, like in Sleeping Beauty.  There are many different customs associated with the party depending on the country or region.  Most girls will choose a  number of friends, girls and guys as a court of honor.  On the night of the party they perform a waltz and sometimes other choreagraphed dances.  Most of them practice for months before the event and a lot of work goes into it.  These kids did a great job and Georgina was just gorgeous as usual for her party.  Her mom and dad even started things off with a traditional mexican dance in full traditional dress, it was great.

Georgina Quince

A Quinceañera party is a tradition in most Latin American countries and a big part of a young girls life.   At 15 years old we have a huge party with tons of food, dancing, and cake.  Georgina’s party is next week but we took her out in her dress and did photos before.  Georgina was a little camera shy at first but we had a lot of fun and got some great shots.

11 girls at the lake

We had a wonderful session today for the quinceañeras from the Sueños de Quinces program on Telemundo. This was the second session for the girls as we did the headshots about 3 weeks ago for the invitation. The party is coming up this friday and it’s going to be a lot of fun.

For those who don’t know about quinceañeras it is a custom in some latin countries that when the girls turn 15 years old they have a big party, kind of like the old coming of age ball in the movies like sleeping beauty. They usually have a court of girls and boys who perform a waltz and sometimes a couple of other choreagraphed dances. For Catholics from Mexico it is usually also accompanied by a special mass in the church or cathedral. Every country and every party is a little bit different but it’s always a lot of fun for the girls and something that every latin girl looks forward to her whole life. My friends in Miami tell me that some of them there will even rent entire hotel ballrooms and it can be like a major broadway production costing upwards of thirty or forty thousand dollars. Non-latino Dads count yourselves lucky, you only have to pay for a wedding.

For the session today we had the 11 girls who are participating in the Sueños de Quince program with Mabel Gonzales of Mabel’s Beauty Care. This is the second annual event that Mabel has sponsored along with about 10 to 15 additional “Padrinos” (in this case vendors who have donated their time and resources to the event). The girls were chosen several months ago to participate based on their willingness to work hard and their positive attitudes. For the past months they have been taking classes, learning beauty tips and eitiquette, and both the girls and boys have been learning and practicing the walz and other dances that they will perform on Friday.

We were going to take photos in the studio but it was such a nice day outside that we decided to be a little bit crazy and go to the Great Salt Lake. It was a lot of fun and we got some great shots. I will post some of them here but you can see the whole session at

Check back next week for an update on the big day.
